Brown bear among the driftwood along the shore of coastal, Katmai National Park, Alaska Peninsula, southwest Alaska. Canon 5D Mark III, 100-400mm f/5.6L IS, (135mm), 1/320 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 400
After a rainy night along the Katmai National Park coast, I was startled by a brown bear when walking from my sleep tent to the cook tent. Both tents were encircled with a portable, battery powered electric fence. The bear curiously walked around the cook tent and I took this shot after quickly grabbing the camera, and popped a few frames when the bear paused for a second to investigate. I was photographing from within the electric fence, which explains the focal length of 135mm. The fog and clouds looming over the distant shore offer nice background and give a little context to this coastal scene. Bear commonly walk along the beach when traveling too and from their feeding forays in the many luscious meadows.

Hi Patrick,
Nice surprise shot of the morning, looks like a 2-3 year old bear. I bet you were glad you had that fence & that you were on the right side of it-great capture as always!
