Snow covered tussocks, Interior, Alaska

Tundra tussocks lie blanketed under fresh autumn snow, just north of the Yukon river in Alaska’s interior. While driving along the highway, this roadside scene captured my immediate attention, since the conditions necessary to create this look are hard to come by. One of the first snows of vital, followed by a relatively calm period which prevents blowing snow from filling in the lower portions surrounding the tussock tops.

The pure and uniform whiteness, along with the smooth texture create a sea of compositional opportunities. A slight amount of backlighting aids in separating the shapes. I took many photographs, with a wide variety of lenses, and they all rendered a very different look.

A longer, telephoto lens in this case helped compress the image and isolate selected shapes. The open area of tussocks constituted an area of approximately thirty by forty yards. This photo is the result of being in the right place at the right time, having never previously found such optimal conditions.
