Paper Moon, Alaska Range

Early in my career, on a brisk October evening, I encountered a unique wisp of clouds around a rising quarter moon. Hanging over the foothills of the Alaska Range, which traverses across interior Alaska, the moon caught my attention, so I pulled over in my car and quickly got my camera set up.

The light dusting of snow provided enough reflective surface to deliver a dramatic blue hue to the scene. The edge of the moon has the appearance of ripped paper, hinting at the title of this image, "Paper Moon."

Shortly after taking this photo, I caught a glimpse of movement on the river bar at the base of the mountain and, after a closer look, spotted a wolf trotting along the gravel bar under the moonlight. The scene is still etched in my memory, and Paper Moon is one of my best-selling fine art prints.
