Mt. McKinley, Wonder Lake, Denali National Park

Wonder Lake is located about 90 miles deep in Denali National Park, at the end of the park road. It is perhaps one of the most photographed locations in the world, which sometimes weakens my motivation to shoot here, but it is amazing how varied and magnificent the light can be at the same spot from day to day.

Denali, at more than 20,000 feet, anchors the Alaska Range dramatically. As the summer evenings cool off, it is not uncommon for the clouds to break up around Denali, sometimes making for exciting late-evening photography. I was traveling alone on this excursion, but one is seldom alone at Wonder Lake on a night like this.

Many other photographers were there as well. I really like the drama that the clouds contribute to this frame, and I often look for clouds to be strong compositional elements in a photo. The blue and gold offer both a warm and cool feel to this scene, and it is accentuated by a warming polarizing filter.
