Winter light on willow branch, Dalton Highway, Alaska

Only one road leads north from Fairbanks, Alaska, stretching nearly 500 isolated miles to the Arctic Ocean. Along this gravel road, just south of the mighty Yukon River, which passes through interior Alaska, a high ridge gets hammered with wind and blowing snow. It has become a favorite place for me to shoot.

Running a little behind schedule one trip, I arrived just in time to throw on my snowshoes, grab my camera and tripod, and run across the blowing snow looking for a scene. It was cold and windy, and I looked frantically for a way to capture the beautiful pink light. With a slow shutter speed, the blowing snow takes on a glowing look, and the deep blues seem electric against the warm pink. I used a 100-400mm zoom lens on a tripod, and the light vanished shortly after I clicked the shutter.
